As a long time friend and fan of Alison Lewis' work (Alison Lewis, Twilight Babies) I was thrilled to have been asked by her to design the packaging for her release A Mile Down Division. Alison tells great stories with her music, and I had the idea to make the CD look like an old storybook.

The painting for the cover is acrylic on gessoed panel. To get the paper texture and yellowing effects for the "pages" I wanted, I scanned old book pages from my collection. The display typeface is adapted from a vintage "how-to" book about lettering. I looked at old commercial design books from my collection for inspiration, and I used imagery I pulled from the songs (the crown and the phone for instance) and married it to themes from my sketchbook that I'd made listening to the mixes she sent me.

She said that it was the first time she had truly been in love with the cover art for a CD. I don't think I could receive a higher complement than that :)
